CONSTRUCTION COORDINATOR - SHORT TERM
Let’s Build Foundation, a global non-profit organization collaborates with the Government of the Republic of Zambia, through Ministry of Education to provide educational infrastructure. Our work is focused on the construction of additional classrooms in government secondary schools and the provision of school furniture. We believe well designed and built classrooms help to increase attendance, improve student outcomes, support better teaching, and reduce student dropouts. Let’s Build is non-religious and has no political affiliation. Our mission is to build classrooms to increase children and youths’ enrolment in secondary education. ROLE PURPOSE
The Construction Coordinator will provide technical support in monitoring and supervising construction of school infrastructure. The coordinator will further support the Construction Manager in project management. The coordinator should have technical knowledge and skills of construction and experience managing Contractors.
SCOPE OF ROLE
Role Dimensions:
- Monitoring and supervision of construction of school related infrastructure and furniture
- Support in Project Management
- Support in contract administration
- Monitoring and supervision of contractors and suppliers
- Providing technical support to the team
- Planning, Designing and documentation of school infrastructure
KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY
- Design school infrastructure using computer aided software (AutoCAD or similar)
- Developing Bills of Quantities and supporting tender documents
- Supervise and monitor contractors and suppliers to ensure that construction is completed to quality standards and within the set timeline and cost.
- Checking contractors’ adherence to specifications, health, environment and safety standards.
- Quality control
- Provide technical support for the construction officer and contractors’ site teams
- Recognize, report, and solve problems in a creative, positive, and constructive way and make recommendations for improvements in systems, procedures, and policies
- Conduct quality control activities and provide solutions to any quality control related challenges.
- Ensuring that contractors keep site records up to date
- Assist in material testing and approvals
- Support the Construction Manager in Project Management including handling of claims and issuing of site instructions
- Cultivate strategic relationships with government district officials to ensure construction takes place with quality and within the required
- Provide timely reports to the Construction Manager and Country Representative on construction progress.
- Participate in meetings with contractors, suppliers, community leaders and Ministry of Education officials where required.

QUALIFICATIONS, DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
- Bachelor’s degree in architecture
- Registered with The Zambia Institute of Architects
- At least five (5) years of experience in the construction industry
- Proven experience in overseeing the construction of schools or other similar construction projects
- Proven experience in design using computer aided construction software e.g AutoCAD
- Proven experience in preparation of Bills of Quantities and material schedules
- Experience of preparing tender documents and selection of suppliers and contractors
- Demonstrated experience in managing contractors and suppliers
- Demonstrated experience in Project Management
- Experience in working with community led construction procedures.
- Strong English language communication skills – both verbal and written.
- Attentive to detail and must be result-oriented
- Ability to collaborate with a wide range of partners and stakeholders, including community, government, and international consultants.
- The ability to travel extensively within Zambia is required.
- Willingness to travel to the field and work in a difficult environment on a regular basis
- Holder of a valid driver’s license
